ASTM A252 Grade 1 Pipe Inspection Checklist for Piling Projects

Inspection is an important part of purchasing ASTM A252 Grade 1 pipe for piling projects. Steel pipe piles are installed into the ground and can be difficult to replace after construction, so buyers should verify the products before shipment or installation.

The first item to check is the pipe specification. Confirm that the supplied pipes are manufactured according to the required ASTM A252 Grade 1 specification. The grade, pipe type, dimensions and quantity should match the purchase order and project requirements.

Next, check the outside diameter and wall thickness. Buyers should measure representative pipes or arrange third-party dimensional inspection when the order is large. Pipe length should also be checked, especially when the project requires specific pile lengths.

The pipe surface and appearance should be inspected for obvious defects such as deep dents, cracks, severe deformation or other damage that could affect handling or installation. Pipe ends should also be checked if the project requires specific end conditions or preparation.

Another important point is traceability. Pipe markings should correspond with the mill test certificate and other inspection records. Heat numbers or other identification information should remain clear so that individual pipes can be traced back to the production records.

Buyers should also review the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) and applicable inspection reports. The documents should correspond with the actual products, specification, dimensions and heat identification.

For large piling projects, buyers may consider using an independent inspection company before shipment. A properly prepared inspection checklist can help identify dimensional, documentation and identification problems before the pipes arrive at the construction site.
