ASTM A252 Grade 1 Pipe: What Should Buyers Specify in an RFQ?

When requesting a quotation for ASTM A252 Grade 1 steel pipe, buyers should provide complete technical and commercial information. ASTM A252/A252M is specifically designed for welded and seamless steel pipe piles used as structural load-bearing members or as shells for cast-in-place concrete piles. The current ASTM edition is A252/A252M-26.

The first item to specify is the steel grade and standard. Clearly state ASTM A252 Grade 1 and identify whether the project requires the inch-pound or metric designation. This prevents confusion between different standards or grades.

Next, provide the outside diameter and wall thickness. Pipe pile dimensions directly affect structural capacity, weight, handling, and installation. Buyers should avoid using only general descriptions such as “large-diameter piling pipe” and instead provide exact dimensions from the engineering drawings.

The pipe length is another essential item. Specify whether the project requires fixed lengths, random lengths, or customized lengths. Long piles may also require field splicing, so the RFQ should state whether special end preparation or pile connections are needed.

Buyers should clearly indicate the manufacturing type. ASTM A252 covers both seamless and welded pipe piles. If welded pipe is acceptable, the RFQ can specify the permitted welding process according to the project requirements.

The RFQ should also include inspection and documentation requirements. These may include Mill Test Certificates, dimensional inspection, tensile testing, hydrostatic testing where specified, and third-party inspection. Project-specific acceptance criteria should be included before production begins.

For marine, coastal, or underground projects, buyers should state any corrosion protection requirements, such as external coating, painting, or other protective systems.

Commercial details are equally important. Include the required quantity, delivery location, preferred Incoterm, packaging method, required delivery date, and quotation validity.
